This skirt staple flatters every figure, we swear.
On every “Top 10 Basic” list ever written there appears an item that is justifiably versatile but not uniformly flattering.
That’s the pencil skirt.
Sure, it works with almost everything in your closet, from a tucked-in tee to an oversized sweater, but in reality not everybody feels comfortable highlighting their curves in the way that a pencil skirt does. We can’t all be as confident as Mad Men’s Joan Holloway. Sigh.
Instead, we’re substituting in a new staple – the structured A-line skirt. Like a pencil skirt, it highlights the waist (a good thing) but it doesn’t always hug the rear (a good thing for some, a bad thing for others). Fun details like a flared or uneven hemline can often mean the attention isn’t always directly on the bottom.
Weighty fabrics help add shape to the full skirt structure and often help to flatter figures, which is never a bad thing in our book.
And just like the pencil skirt, when purchased in a neutral shade like black or navy, it can work back to just about everything you already own. It’s an instant outfit updater, all in one easy-to-wear piece.
