Cover Up: Discover the top coats for every type of weather
Sure, you could get through winter with just one coat but where is the fun in that? Instead of looking at your coat as just something to keep you warm as you hurry from your car to your office, think of it as part of your outfit – it should be the finishing touch and work with your ensemble underneath. With that in mind, I present the 4 coats you need this winter to top off every look for every weather situation.
A chance of rain: Metallic bomber
Cloudy days practically beg for something eye-catching to beat the bad weather blues and a high-shine metallic bomber, like this one from Paris-based label Études, does just that. It plays up the space-age metallic trend that was a runway hit this F/W 2018 and its no-fuss boxy cut makes it our top choice. For cooler days, wear it over a chunky knit or roll neck sweater.
Arctic chill: Something furry
Cool nights (and days) call for something that radiates both heat and style. This winter, that means something furry, either real or faux. One that grazes the mid-calf, like this black number by Helen Yarkmak Milano is the ultimate nighttime companion to cover up your party gear but it also works during the day when styled more casually with jeans and sneakers (fashion is all about the contrast). Look for one with a silky lining in a cool hue.
Sunny skies ahead: Textured vest
Luckily the sun doesn’t hibernate all winter and for those days when it feels like spring is just around the corner (when in reality, it’s months away!), try a long duster vest in a cuddly teddy texture, like this one by Hamburg-based Ethel Vaughn. It’s modern update to the teddy coat that’s everywhere this winter but its sleeveless nature means you could realistically wear it through to the spring season. Streamlined pieces like pencil skirts or slim pants work perfectly underneath.
And every day in between: Suede maxi coat
Fans of The Matrix were in for a real treat this season when long and lean leather coats invaded the runways and this suede number by Jitrois fits the bill. The versatile ankle-grazing leather coat should be an everyday favorite this winter – and it’s not hard to see why Jitrois loyalists including Beyonce, Jennifer Lopez and Naomi Campbell turn to the Paris-based designer for their leather fix. Basic black is a classic but to freshen up the style, try one in a soft brown, tan or cognac shade.
