how to style classic blue, pantone's color of the year
If January is commonly associated to the color blue in an emotional way – there’s a lot to feel down about at this time of year – it is also the shade Pantone chose as the Color of the Year 2020. Or more specifically Classic Blue which most people would call cobalt or royal blue. On the contrary of making us feel moody, blue is actually the hue that represents calm, stability and constancy, which is fitting as we enter the new decade. It also stands for timelessness and longevity in a time when our environmental conscience is shifting and we are looking for colors that won’t be out of fashion in the near future.
Luckily, this vivid shade of blue had already submerged the catwalks for SS20, before Pantone made the announcement last month. So there are a lot of designers to turn to when looking for inspiration on how to wear it this year. No need to wait the spring to sport the zen and on-trend hue, here we give you a few tips to inject classic blue into your winter looks.
Wear a blue trench over a black and white look made of a pleated midi skirt and snow white turtleneck that you can tuck inside for a sophisticated allure. Add a pair of heeled leather boots and intricate silver bracelet to complete your office outfit.
Don’t be afraid to pair different hues of the color, ranging from navy to dark blue, and choose a patterned piece to jazz up your look. Wear a sleeveless dress with an asymmetric hem and an oversized blazer to play with volumes while heeled knee high boots will elongate your legs.
For a more sporty look, choose fitted track pants that still look elegant and pair with a fuss-free white top. Add some white sneakers and a leather shoulder pouch to carry your essentials, while a teddy shearling jacket will keep you warm when going from the office to the gym.
If blue doesn’t really fit your foundation, you can easily find accessories in the same shade such as a pair of suede pumps to sport the trend. Dress cigarette trousers with a classic white shirt and add a luxurious wool coat when going out for drinks in the city. Silver earrings will give an edgy twist to a simple yet elegant outfit.
If you’re dressing for a big event, combine a beautiful long dress with a classic black blazer to get the perfect evening look. Add croc-embossed patent boots to give texture, and touches of gold spotted on your accessories to make your outfit sparkle!
