5 vintage items making a comeback for 2019
From second hand garments to pre-owned jewellery, vintage is the timeless trend that will always have its place in the midst of fashion’s frenetic pace. But in this constant cyclical circle, some items stay forever young while others fall in and out of fashion and are constantly taken out of the back of our closet. Here’s how to find your way in second hand treasure troves, or if you’d rather invest in new staples with a vintage feel, we tell you exactly which one you will need right now.
Inside every high-end second hand boutique, you will find a huge amount of designer’s bags that are only waiting to find a new owner. Between the classic Hermès Kelly and the Chanel 2.55, difficult to choose the one that will turn into the ideal companion and that you will want to wear over and over again. But some brands have decided to bring a fresh new wind to their iconic best-sellers. Since Sex & The City’s Carrie Bradshaw turned the Fendi baguette bag into an iconic accessory in the late 90s, it became the It-bag that could be spotted on the arm of nearly everyone. With its perfect shape and stamped with the well-known double F monogram, it made its return this year with a relaunch from the Italian brand in a variety of different sizes and detachable shoulder straps. Same goes for the Dior saddle bag that made its comeback last year in a range of materials from leather to the brand’s Oblique canvas.
Once a ladylike pair of shoes in the 60s, the kitten heel pumps were the appropriate height to wear from the office to a wedding, and less hard on our feet than the vertiginous stilettos. While we’ve already seen them coming back in the 90s – thanks once again to our favourite Sex & The City character – they were quickly stored in the back of our closet again in favour of some more flattering high heels. Fast-forward to 2019 and the kitten heel is getting back on trend with boots, mules and sandals adopting the low-heel comfortable silhouette. You can of course lay your hands on your grandma’s pair provided that you give them a trip to the cobbler, or look into brands such as By Far, Tibi and Neous for a contemporary take on the trend. They look great with a pair of jeans as they do with a midi skirt and are a fantastic alternative to flats when you want to look just a bit more chic.
Long regarded as a men’s staple that only a creepy uncle would wear, the short-sleeved bowling shirt has seen a revival on the catwalk this season. In a summer heatwave, it’s the ideal item to wear in the office when all we would like to do is live in a bikini 24/7. You can find this old-school shirt in lots of different fabrics, from silk to cotton and linen, and its slightly oversized, boxy cut make it the most breathable and easy-going garment to quickly put on in the morning. Wear it untucked with suit trousers or a pencil skirt and it will give a more relaxed look to your work-ready outfit. It also works great unbuttoned as a summer jacket layered over a dress to cover your shoulders, while still being lighter and more versatile than the classic blazer. To really get the modern twist out of this retro staple, choose yours cropped and pair it with denim cycling shorts or white flared jeans. And don’t forget to bring it on your next sun-drenched holidays as it will be your best ally to wear over your swimsuit when the sun goes down.
You probably already have been digging into your great-aunt’s drawers to find a pearl necklace to adorn your cocktail dress but quickly realised they made your look like an uptight girl. Hold on tight as pearls are back for summer but this time, they have been given a contemporary update. From sculptural rings to fine hoops and cool earcuffs, this classic item has the power to turn any piece of jewellery into a mermaid-like accessory that we’ll want to wear day and night. Look at brands such as Saskia Diez and Ninna York for modern inspiration when you’re thinking of recycling those pearls that are collecting dust on your shelves.
Celebrating 45 years, the wrap dress is the iconic staple that helped Diane von Furstenberg to reach her fame when arriving in New York in the 70s. Since then, it has been a symbol for self-assured, empowered women as they are the practical, elegant and sensual items to wear at every age and on any occasion. This summer go-to dress tightens around the waist and flatters all body shapes as it elongates the legs and neckline when dressed up with heeled mules. You can now find it in trendy prints, interesting textures and diverse hemlines to give a twist to the classic style. For lazy and on-the-go mornings, this dress will be the only item you will need to wrap around you before leaving for a busy day ahead.
