Designer Portrait: Matériel
The Fashion Week in Georgia's capital Tbilisi is attracting a lot of attention on the international fashion scene - and MATÉRIEL is the shooting star of the moment. The premium line, led by design talents Aleksandre Akhalkatsishvili (photo above left) and Lado Bokuchava (photo above right), is being created under the roof of the local textile company Materia, once the largest fashion producer in the USSR and today a patron of Georgia's young design elite. The two designers are very proud of the "Made in Georgia" flag - they also produce it in their own country.
MADAME: How would you define the aesthetics of your fashion?
A. AKHALKATSISHVILI & L. BOKUCHAVA: Minimalist, bold, sophisticated.
MADAME: Which garment gives a woman the most strength and sovereignty?
A. AKHALKATSISHVILI: A suit. Nothing looks so sensual and so strong at the same time as a perfectly cut two-piece suit.
MADAME: What does success mean to you?
A. AKHALKATSISHVILI: Success is the motivation to work harder and make your dreams come true. In other words, the better is the enemy of the good.
MADAME: And what does a good work-life balance look like for you?
L. BOKUCHAVA: During the week you can immerse yourself in the work with complete concentration and just let go on weekends. That's a good thing.
MADAME: Which place in Tbilisi inspires you most at the moment?
L. BOKUCHAVA: The nightclub "Bassiani". People from all over the world come together at this place to dance and be happy and free. To observe this makes us happy.
