8 totally logical reasons for detoxing your closet, now!
1. You´ve got nothing to wear.
You stand in front of your wardrobe. And there is absolutely nothing to wear. Although your closet is loaded. Dresses, skirts, and shirts are so close-packed you don´t even know how to get your hands between them, and pullovers pile up like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. If you are worried that one day you will be buried under a ton of cashmere only by opening the closet door, it´s definitely time to detox your wardrobe. Not because you own too much cashmere (that´s impossible), but because you obviously cannot afford a more spacious closet. Clothes are like human beings: they need space to make an impact. From now on, consider your closet a stage for your most beautiful fashion. Example: A superstar silk dress will move elegantly in front of your eyes when it hangs solo - not attached to the weird hippie kaftans you bought at the beach last year. Just as it would be impossible for you to give your best performance on a, say, conference stage while your weird hippie friends you met last summer shout silly jokes at you from the sideline. In short, let your clothes shine, and they will inspire you. And by the way, getting rid of stuff will be like a class reunion - you will meet old friends you had abandoned but realize you actually have always liked. It is mainly crisp white shirts, black skirts and actually not too badly tailored blazers! What did you do without them? Wrong question, because your old friends moved on without you: they opened a Worn-only-once-Club in the depths of your closet a very long time ago. And they were fine without you. It will take time to reconnect.
2. You are heartbroken.
The love of your life is gone. It hurts so much that you seriously consider getting a tattoo. Stop even thinking about it - breakups are a number one and therefore really boring reason to get inked (and tattoos nowadays are the most basic thing we can imagine). Your money will be better used for a brand new lovely dress. Because now that your heart is broken, you won´t be able any longer to put on that perfect floaty dress you wore when you lovebirds watched the sunset in Santorini. Every time you take it out of your closet, there will always be this little ache in your heart! So, away with it. Wasn´t Santorini one big tourism hell anyway? Also, get rid of anything that reminds you of your ex, like his comfy washed-out t-shirt with the silly beer advertising print. And the perfect men´s shirt he once forgot at your place, and you made your own - actually: keep it. Can´t ever have too many of these, a personal stylist would say.
3. You´ve got competition.
No, we are not talking about your love life (and if this is your primary concern, get a career). We are talking about business. There is a new entry in your office trying to outsmart you? You want a promotion just like somebody else? Or your boss is continuously mansplaining? Time to build real confidence. In other words: time for a wardrobe makeover. Clothes are not only an armour - more importantly, they can also be charming weapons with a message when chosen smartly. We know it´s silly, but it is all about image. Time for a clever edit, because the badass wardrobe is not just about really cool oversized suits. The woman in competition needs a silky flower dress as well to bedazzle the adversary. What needs to go? Everything that is unexceptional, so you won´t even think about the black sweater-jeans-combo in a weak moment before you head out for the office. Think like a First Lady, act like a First lady. Not for nothing they say that you should always dress for the job you want, not the job you have - so be your own image consultant.
4. You need money.
You think you are broke. No, you are not! After all, you haven´t stopped investing over the last years - in fashion. It is now time to divest some assets: your clothes! Just sell everything you have not worn for the previous two years. Everything is salable - high street pieces on eBay, designer dresses on vestiairecollective.com. Yes, it is not going to be easy, and we are not talking of the emotional pain of separation: taking pictures, measurements and describing the flaws, and running to the post office every two days. But don´t even think of giving up and getting married: not even marriage is a walk in the park (especially with millionaires). P.S. Alaia dresses and Chanel jackets should never be sold and are styling staples, no matter how deep you are in the red. You will pay for it later - with regret.
5. Your body does not fit your clothes any longer.
There are two possibilities: you have become a triathlete just to impress another very good-looking triathlete, therefore, you have lost two sizes (and your social life due to training hours). Stop reading here, your tailor can fix this! But it is more likely you have gained a size with no reason (no, Christmas is not one). Do not despair, this is the perfect opportunity for personal reinvention! So get a wardrobe consultant and free yourself from the wishful thoughts that one day the tight sexy leather pants will fit again - and create space in your closet and your mind for a new baggy style pair. Time to let loose. Looks more modern anyway.
6. You have been to Paris.
Welcome back from your trip to the fashion capital of the world, the city of the best-dressed women! Of course, you had not planned to shop. But the moment you left the plane, you instantly felt a little demodé. All these nonchalantly smoking Parisiennes everywhere, with their undone hair and flair of „I don´t care“! The outfit that you put together so meticulously like a fashion stylist the evening before needed to be modified, if not eliminated altogether, in short: you just did not work hard enough to make it look effortless. Back home, your inner Parisienne (and her new conquests from Chloé, The Kooples and Yves Saint Laurent) requests her space in the closet. Be careful though - if your next trip is to Milan, you will have to start all over again. Because your costly french style will not match your new minimalist Prada persona. It is a vicious circle. Definitely safer to travel somewhere where people wear flip-flops and shorts and do not give you any style tips just by being themselves.
7. You feel stressed.
Yes, we all do - and not because of our workload. Aren´t there just too many digital temptations to get it done? And, according to Psychology Today(https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/fulfillment-any-age/201705/5-reasons-clear-the-clutter-out-your-life), the danger of distraction is all around you in the real world as well: Clutter. It can interrupt your flow — not only physically, but also mentally. So if you are feeling stressed, why don´t you start decluttering right in your closet. Not only will it make you a happier, calmer person - but a better-dressed one as well. If you feel overwhelmed, use the services of a personal stylist.
8. Your closet does not match your location.
You never run out of lovely summer dresses. There are plenty of them. That´s awesome, you are set for the next ten summers! Only there is one problem: you live in a northern country. So there are thirty 30 degree outfits. But just ten days hot enough to actually wear them. Time to do a reality check. Either you consider a move to a sunnier place. Or you adjust your closet accordingly - if you live in an area with 80 per cent winter time, 80 per cent of your wardrobe should consist of winter clothes. It is that easy.
