What would Jackie O. wear today? These new classics
Everything is changing - even fashion classics. So instead of trying to look like fashion icons from the past, better ask what Audrey Hepburn and Jackie Onassis would have worn today!
Every time someone talks about fashion classics, eventually, Audrey Hepburn or Jackie Kennedy will come up. Yes - these wonderful ladies were incredibly well dressed and should inspire us with their sense of style. But should we try to look like them, in trenchcoats, black turtlenecks and ballet flats? Definitely not. Instead of looking like straight out of a movie from 1969, the better question should be: what would these two fashion icons choose today and make their classics? Here are five contemporary fashion basics to invest in, because they are here to stay:
Leather pants are the new cigarette pants
Both Jackie and Audrey loved slim, black pants. The more contemporary basic is the leather trouser. Not only will they be a big hit next winter, but I really cannot remember when there has been the last fashion season without them. There are all kinds of shapes out there, but which one should you opt for? The slim, high-waisted carrot shape - it is the perfect version between the skinny ones and the trend silhouette with wide legs. You can pair it with any sweater, blazer or sandal. In winter, tuck it into flat boots - these will be your new jeans!
The long oversized coat is the new trench
Don´t ditch your trench coat. It really will never go out of style. But I guess Audrey and Jackie would have developed a passion for another coat silhouette, too: Thanks to Phoebe Philo at Céline, it has been around for many years now - the long, oversized coat. If you want to invest your hard-earned money in a new coat, don´t even think about knee-length blazer styles: the long, large coat will make your life much easier! Because you can literally throw it over anything from jeans to dresses to wide pants. It works with sneakers and with heeled boots. And you don´t have to worry about the length of your skirt. If it shows, fine, if not, same!
The pleated dress is the new little black dress
One can never fail with a little black dress, so goes the saying. Wrong: it completely depends on the silhouette! So while Audrey Hepburn aka Holly Golightly surely looked fabulous in her LBD in Breakfast at Tiffany´s“, the shape nowadays would appear a little demodé. So what´s the new, feminine LBD? The pleated silk dress. It has been a hit on the Gucci runway since Alessandro Michele took over in 2016 - and definitely looks like a new classic now. There are long-sleeved and sleeveless versions - simply make sure it has a flattering midi-length.
Hoodies are the new black turtlenecks
Yves Saint Laurent believed that nothing is more elegant than a woman in a black turtleneck. So did Audrey Hepburn. And indeed, no woman should stop wearing them - but they get a new style buddy that has transformed from streetwear to ready-to-wear: the hoodie. Believe me, it is not only for girls but looks even better on grown-up ladies. Pair it with skirts or wear it under dresses and blazers - for the next ten years to come!
