How to look good at the beach when you are not 40 anymore
You don´t feel comfortable in your bikini anymore? Yes, age, even in times of body positivity, is an issue for every woman on the beach - but the fun is not! Here are some styling tricks for dealing more graciously with your flaws
It is a discussion that has been going on for ages: Is there an age when a woman should stop wearing a bikini? Fortunately, the times of age-appropriateness are over. In the era of body positivity, strict and discriminating style rules, fortunately no longer exist, and there are a lot of celebrities proving they look better at the age of 50 or 60 than ever. But ladies, let´s be honest: we are no celebrities with personal training every day. Of course, nobody needs to hide their flaws. Because at the beach, it is all about relaxing and being ourselves! Mantra No 1: the older you get, the more it is about being an elegant lady and the less about being the babe of the beach. Mantra No 2: don´t overthink it and have fun! It is not essential to have the perfect decolleté; it is important to have fun - just like Goldie Hawn, here seen at age 69 at the Club 55 in Saint Tropez. Anyway, here are a few style tricks that will help you feel even more yourself - and have more fun.
Don´t: The printed swimsuit
Prints are fun. But they are not elegant. And they do not turn the attention away from your belly, rather the opposite. If you really love coloured summer prints, invest in a printed beach cover-up, not in swimwear!
Do: The black swimsuit
This might sound a little boring, but trust me, it is not. Black swimsuits are the epitome of chic swimwear: they look great with a tan and show that you are so over trends! They come in many shapes with chic details, like the asymmetric shoulder or bows. If you have a very large bust, don´t automatically consider underwired versions - this makes you look old. Instead, search for a swimsuit with less cleavage and a deeper back decolleté. Remember that you don´t have to squeeze your body into perfect proportions at the beach. Your bosom is not perfect anymore, so what? It is more about showing a certain class.
Don´t: Cut denim shorts
Yes, we all love them, but the sad truth is that they look good on twens. And that´s about it. Worn by women over 50, they always have this certain air of desperation to not be young anymore. Who wants to be 20 again? Really, nobody!
Do: The Pareo
The Pareo, basically a large cotton foulard, has been a little bit underrated over the last few years. But in fact, nothing looks more elegant. Wear them over your swimsuit, tied at one side of your hips - this will give you a little more waist. Or cross two angles over your decolleté and tie them at your neck. This is a perfect dress for being dressed appropriately at a beach bar. The most important thing about the pareo though is its message: I don´t care so much anymore about my look, I am here for having a good time. That is a very sexy attitude, at any age. Just make sure your pareo is made of light cotton, not of cheap viscose fabric. In terms of prints, anything goes - do what you don´t do in real life anymore: wear leopard!
Don´t: The Triangle Bikini
Even if you still have the body for this tiny version of a bikini: Resist the urge to wear it. It just does not do anything for you: your bosom will move freely and all the young girls wearing it too will cruelly make you feel that your youth has long gone.
Do: The Ballerina bikini
Tops with more coverage, Nineties style, are very much on trend right now - and I think they are a fabulous choice for women of a certain age. They keep everything in place without looking old and have a sporty retro touch. The ballerina bikini works as well with bigger busts. Bye bye, underwired bikini!
Don´t: The string bottom
Yes, these bottoms tied at the side of the waist are best for tanning - but they really do not contribute to the beauty of a lady: if you have curves, they will simply vanish, if you are slim, they simply do not look very classy.
Do: the High Waisted bottom
If your bottom is your concern, do not try to cover it completely. It is more important to give structure to your side curves and your belly. High-waisted bottoms, 90ies style, are perfect for this!
Don´t: The ruffled beach kaftan
When it comes to cover-ups, the older we get, the simpler our dress choices should be - because effortlessness is an enviable trait! Don´t try to look like a hippie and don´t think you have to drown in a large Kaftan just because you cannot get of your pasta love handles from last winter!
Do: The shirt dress
A simple, plain shirt dress is the most elegant choice - it gives you a little bit of a waist and covers your arms on the way to the beach. About which you should really not worry anymore once you are there. Because you are beautiful! Another very cool yet elegant way to arrive is a lightweight kimono - wear it open over your swimsuit or with a rope belt if you have a bikini underneath!
