Make Your Workout Gear Work All Day
We're 2 weeks into 2019 and so far, you're actually sticking to your New Year's resolution to hit the gym as much as possible. Congrats! But if you're like us, you're struggling with lugging your gym gear to the office and back and your motivation is dwindling. What if you could ditch the duffle bag and instead incorporate your workout wear into your everyday wear? It's a styling trick that models like Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner are famous for (they basically made "athleisure" a thing) and according to a recent study in the UK, nearly half of British women consider their gym clothes part of their everyday wardrobe, while two thirds are happy to wear them to a cafe. And thanks to a bevy of fashion brands that are blurring the lines between the locker room and the street, it's never been easier to pop into a Pilates class during your lunch break and no one will be the wiser. Read on for our tips on how to make your workout wear work all day.
PAIR YOUR SWEATS WITH SOMETHING POSH
You know sweats are okay outside of the house when Karl Lagerfeld says so (the designer sent logo sweatshirts down Chanel's runway for Resort 2019). The key is to find one that's anything but sloppy. Look for a bright colour, cool message or interesting detail like a cropped cut or mesh panels - something that says, this is more than just a sweatshirt. Pair with something luxe like buttery soft leather trousers or a posh puffer jacket in a fun print. And don't forget to always accessorize your gear. That means a handbag that blends fashion with function.
GO MONOCHROME
For years, black dominated workout wear as the colour du jour. But other neutrals are now just as cool - and are making it really easy to pair back to your daytime outfit. Pick a neutral shade like military green, navy or grey and wear it head to toe. A monochromatic look means instant sophistication. And always remember to layer. Our favourite athleisure item for throwing over our favorite work-out tee is a sleeveless vest complete with hoodie.
PLAY WITH TEXTURES & PROPORTIONS
There's nothing fashionable about the high-performance fabric found in most workout gear or in your favourite pair of sweats. So instead, rely on the rest of your outfit to incorporate textures and fabrics that belong on a runway. That means, chunky knits in cashmere or virgin wool, sleek metallics for a touch of gloss or accessory accoutrements like feathers and chain link handles. And just like any other outfit, playing with proportions is an excellent strategy. If your sweat-wicking yoga pants are fitted to your figure, go for something boxy or oversized on top.
