1 Skirt, 4 Ways
Ever since it sashayed down the runway at Proenza Schouler and Christopher Kane's S/S 2014 shows, the accordion skirt has been a street style and every day staple. 5 years later, the pleated midi skirt is still going strong, making a big splash on the S/S 2019 runways yet again thanks to Dior, Valentino and Fendi.
As a fashion fanatic, we assume you've been on the cutting edge and have been wearing your accordion pleat for several seasons now. So, how do you breathe new life into this wardrobe staple (and maximize your investment)? We looked to the streets of Paris Fashion Week S/S 2019 for inspiration. Find out 4 ways to re-wear your favourite skirt (in our case, it's Gauchere's black and white number).
1) Contrast with an oversized knit
The silky smooth texture of an accordion pleat is practically begging to be paired with a chunky knit in an oversized or billowy shape. Offset your accordion midi with a super soft wool, cashmere or angora sweater in a complementary shade.
2) Invest in a vest
The beauty of a vest is that it gives off the crisp, professional vibe of a blazer but it's just so much cooler. Look for one in a midi or maxi length when wearing with your skirt and keep the rest of the look relatively fuss-free.
3) Add 2 "B's" - a bodysuit and a blazer
Make your pleated piece work for the office by pairing with a boxy blazer in a high-quality fabrication (bonus points if it's double-breasted). Skip the corporate blazer-and-blouse combo by opting for a bodysuit in a neutral shade. It's a fresher take on what to wear under your blazer.
4) Let your accessories take centre stage
Sometimes it's a good thing to keep your skirt simple and let your accessories do the talking. That means choosing a monochromatic piece on top and opting for head-turning shoes, bags, jewels and hat.
