Mommy and me Style
We’ve all seen the classic movie scene where two women show up to a party in similar dresses and the normal reaction might entail running away, crying in the ladies toilet, finding a wardrobe alternative or laughing it off.
However, many celebrities are turning their backs on this classic fashion rule to conform to one of the sweetest fashion trends I’ve seen: mommy and me outfits.
Although it is hard to come by matching outfits that aren’t cheesy, some celebrities prove that outfit coordination is no longer solely reserved for dance routines and torturing kids in public.
Instead, Mommy and Me outfits are the new way to showcase your family’s personality and can be altered to fit each individual’s personal style.
So, whether you have yet to conform to the mommy & me outfit trend or have a photo album full of embarrassing matching photo-ops, let me introduce you to some celeb influencers, who are putting a modern spin on the mommy & me outfit tradition. Beyoncé is the Queen of mommy and me styling, directly followed by Kim Kardashian West.
But I’ve got good news for you, mommys! While most of the obsession with mommy-and-me style can be traced back to the luxe designer looks worn by Kim Kardashian West and daughter North, there are getups for more relatable lives.
There’s a slew of style inspiration out there for moms who are less into Balmain babies than Bugaboos.
The style is not so much about wearing exactly the same designer print like Beyoncé and Ivy Blue do, but to reflect mommy's style in the kid’s outfit.
Both wearing white boho blouses and blue jeans with red shoes? Perfect. If mum’s wearing red, heeled sandals and the little one wears red sneakers, all is fine. In my opinion, the style is even more cool when the outfits aren’t identical. As any style-aware shopper knows, footwear is key to making a look…
Trading matchy-matchy mommy-and-me dressing for a complementary approach will not only streamline your shopping, but it’ll ensure that you’ll stand out from the crowd. This complementary concept can be worn for mom & son as well as mom & daughter.
And sometimes, the littlest of complements make for a big look: Partner looks for mum and son aren’t that easy, but dressing in the same colors can even be topped by wearing similar hats or caps for double the cuteness.
It is more about having the same look than having identical pieces. Two times blue jeans and some rock ‘n’ roll shirts? Pretty cool! The little one wearing a white “Ramones” shirt and mommy wearing a black Beatles shirt will still bring the coolness of matchy-matchy looks without looking like twins. Plus: going away from totally identical pieces gives you more freedom of styling the partner look with your son.
My recommendation is to get inspired by kids-wear instead of doing it the other way round! This is way more fun and can inspire new outfit ideas. Don’t go looking for a similar printed hoodie for your little one, but go children-wear shopping and if you like the style, try to find something similar for your wardrobe.
Although this style is not for everyone or every occasion, I think it can be pretty cool sometimes. Going to a garden party with matching outfits is a super sweet idea, especially when the family picture won’t have color trouble like red and pink.
But like for all styles, we’ve got a rule here: unless you’re a celeb like Kim Kardashian, don’t overdo the look and just dip into it from time to time. Having mom and daughter all day every day in matching outfits may look a bit weird and obsessed and cause some shopping trouble, too.
