Bleach it, bleach it real good
Just like those extra pounds you acquired over the winter and can never seem to get rid of, the 80s are back and here to stay. Think Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and the early nineties without the clashing of neon prints. That's not to say that neon hasn't already snuck its way in, but we’ll talk about that another time. This time acid wash has really caught our eye; ever since the New York label, Proenza Schouler, brought out their acid wash denim collection. Soon to follow was Isabel Marant, Off-White and then Balmain showed off their spin on the acid wash in Paris. As you can see, even the cool kids are on board and bleaching.
Just like the 80s big shoulder that came back last season in full bloom, acid wash - almost whitewashed denim - can be found on dresses, trousers, blouses and jackets - basically everything. Question is though, only because you can find acid wash everywhere, can you wear it everywhere? No.
When I heard about this revival, my first instinct was, „Ew, what on earth is happening to fashion?“And as much as I love a light wash jean, acid wash can easily look cheap and messy when worn in the wrong way - so be careful. I predict it’s going to be the ripped jean of 2019. Some people found the look homeless and didn’t understand why you would spend money on „broken“ clothes. Others said it was a fashion statement. Like the ripped jean, the acid jean is all about how you wear it. There are places where you are just not going to get away with an acid jean. So, DON’T wear it to an interview, meeting of the parents or ANY formal event - the rules are that simple. Now, I would wear the trend to go shopping, brunch with the girls or a fun casual date, with some „nicer“ accessories (heels, statement jewelry, you get the drift).
I think that’s the key, accessories. You want to add modern, sleek accessories, which will keep the look from appearing „cheap“ and actually like you’re from the 80s. In this case I would say, „this lady looks stylish and knows what’s cool“. Just like with any bold print, you’re always safe by adding a plain basic.
To complete the look, you only need two key components: acid light-wash denim and a BOXY blazer. Who knows? You might even find these items in your parents' attic. The silhouette is certainly top heavy, so grab your bold terrestrial TV graphics, bright shades and pastel prints to commit to the full look.
Feel like you’re back in high school? Not to worry, acid wash is not only a casual look. You can even sneak it into your business attire. A tailored blazer like this one from Blazé and killer heels like these from Walter de Silva should do the trick.
So, it turns out I’ll keep those extra winter pounds and learn to love them - just like my new acid wash jeans!
