Originally made from seal or caribou skin, the parka is a coat with a fur or faux fur-lined hood that was invented by the Caribou Inuit to protect him from the freezing temperatures and the wind, while hunting and kayaking in the Arctic. A different version, the snorkel parka, was developed in the USA during the 50’s for the armed forces stationed in extremely cold areas.
Its outer shell was created in a sage green Dupont flight silk and the inside had an orange quilted lining that was first made of wool, then of polyester to make the coat lighter and warmer. The hood could be zipped right up, leaving just a small area open for the wearer’s eyes. It is this version that is now mostly recreated by countless designers and clothing stores in various colors, from navy blue to bright orange, fabrics, often a cotton-nylon blend, and cuts. The length can also vary and the jacket is sometimes equipped with drawstrings at the waist and cuffs. In the 80’s, popularized by the hip hop culture, it became a definite unisex garment. Today, the parka is more present than ever in the fashion world and it is a very versatile piece that can be worn any season of the year. It has simply become a timeless wardrobe essential with a legitimate place in our closets.
