The Art of Monochrome
Wearing monochrome in black and white can be quite intimidating for those of us who are not used to such a dramatic look. Indeed, it has a ladylike vibe when done in intricate geometric patterns and its timeless and classic edge oozes a whole lot of elegance. I absolutely love the style and wanted to find ways to inject coolness into it, to set a more current and relaxed tone.
By going for clean lines, pairing basic separates or donning a single garment in a subdued pattern, I discovered that it is possible to achieve a look that loses none of its purity, which is what’s so divine about going monochrome, all while looking chic and laid-back.
Fashion blogger extraordinaire, Vanessa Hong, shows us how it’s done.
1. Less is more
Go for the long, flowy silhouette trend and don a white maxi skirt with a white button down shirt. Finish the look with ankle strap heels and a stylish studded leather handbag in black. This ensemble is a fab office outfit!
Wear a pair of black leather pants with a basic white t-shirt knotted in front. Black ankle strap heels infuse this outfit with total sophistication and make it easy to go from day with a blazer, to night with a duster coat.
Don a black leather mini skirt with a white tee and wear an ultraglam fuzzy white coat. Perfect the outfit with dazzling black mules. This look has tons of attitude!
Pair a chic white sleeveless sheath dress with black and white sneakers. Accessorize this ensemble with an elegant black tote. The revamped Jackie O. vibe makes it the ideal outfit for an important business meeting, if you work in the creative field.
Rock a white, oversized V-neck sweater off one shoulder, a white straight maxi dress with a side slit and black ankle straps. A black handbag is the necessary addition to this easy breezy, alluring look.
6. Polished rocker
Wear a white tee with a white flared denim, a black leather biker jacket and black and white sneakers. A glam black tote perfects this sporty, yet sophisticated, outfit. You'll love it, if you have to travel to a warmer destination during this winter season!
7. Badass babe
Don a chic patterned long sleeve sheath mini dress with a plunging neckline and sky high lace-up ankle boots. This look really rules with its fierce va-voom attitude!
Up your monochrome style game with a pair of black oversized sunglasses to make sure these looks get all the attention they deserve!
It's a modern classic and for good reason: The LBD can take you from morning to evening—and even to the next day—effortlessly and in style.
Here, I show you just how versatile this look can be using layers to transform it for every need. Seriously, there are almost an unlimited number of ways to style your LBD, and if you’re creative, you’ll never have to wear it the same way twice. Check out new dress combinations below!
A little black dress can always be counted on to deliver a best-dressed evening look with hardly any extra effort. Nothing screams chic more than a LBD cloaked in faux fur.
Keep your look ever elegant by sticking to neutral tones, with crystal drop earrings and a boxy clutch. It's all the sparkle you need.
To create an outstanding evening look, accessorize with a statement necklace or a choker.
It may seem like a no-brainer, but the addition of an eye-catching bauble can give your LBD a new lease on life. For a more dramatic effect, try layering two simple, long necklaces in gold or silver.
Take your LBD to almost every occasion and update it with an Embellished Collar – for example, for a date night! I love the idea of adding an embellished detachable collar to any of the high-neck dresses you own. This will change your LBD into a whole new dress and shows your good sense of fashion!
It’s cold outside and you want to create an edgy look with tights? Slip On Swiss-Dot Tights!
A pair of patterned tights is an inexpensive and seasonably sensible way to add visual interest to an LBD. Be careful with this season's fishnets – only try those with small diamond squares and pair them with a knee length dress. Fishnets may create a more grunge or rock ‘n roll look with your LBD, but can be worn with high heels in a classy way, too.
There’s no better way to show off your figure than to add a belt around the smallest part of your waist.
Try a metal belt to recreate your own LBD in a new way. Vary between chic and rock ‘n roll style by changing the belt from classy metal to a leather belt with a huge statement belt buckle.
Not sure what to layer above? A colored coat will work as a statement accessory and is a perfect way to update your LBD for evening events or work in colder weather. Pairing a leather jacket to a LBD is one of my favorite ways to wear it effortlessly, all day every day. Dressing down your LBD works well with rock ‘n roll moto jackets. Another way to make this dress, usually reserved for evening events, street style-appropriate is to pair your LBD with a trendy printed bomber jacket.
Wearing your LBD to every occasion depends mostly on the shoes:
One of my favorite ways to wear any LBD is with androgynous accessories like an oversized blazer and statement brogues.
Adding masculine shoes to your LBD will create a more sophisticated style while dressing your LBD down at the same time. A perfect way to wear your LBD to work almost every day!
Change your outfit in a few seconds for the after work party and take your LBD to the next level by rocking a pair of bold, killer shoes. Pointed heels always create a sexy look!
Ever tried to pair your LBD with thigh-high boots? The outcome is a sexy, but relaxed style!
For example, pairing your LBD with a moto leather jacket will look endlessly cool with sneakers or ankle boots, but laid back and sexy with heeled sandals. Play with those styles to create the look you feel most comfy in!
Wearing a cocktail-appropriate LBD with tennis shoes is a bold move, but for those daring enough, it can provide a delightfully unexpected contrast, which is totally my style. I love to make my LBD ready for every day!
You’re a real fashionista and not afraid to try new looks? Pair your LBD and heels with colored socks!
So, what’s your dress style? I hope you’re trying your black dress in new combinations now and using it in the office instead of only ever wearing it for evening events!
