Leave men in flip-flops alone!
Every year at the beginning of summer the same discussion arises: Is it ok for men to wear flip-flops? Yes, I know in the eyes of most women flip-flops on men's feet are an absolute turn off! But isn't that "reversed” sexism? If a man said that about a woman, wouldn't feminists call him a sexist?
The most famous of all sandal wearers would undoubtedly be ex-US President Barack Obama. Not only does he look casual on Hawaiian holidays, but also on cultural occasions, such as visiting the Washington Intelligence Museum.
Are naked men’s feet really urgly?
So where does the yearly reoccurring nonsense come from?
Women gossip about how men dress and how they “should” dress everywhere: in articles, chatting on the train or in the office. All because naked men's feet, legs and arms are just so unpleasant to look at. This, ladies and gentlemen, is called "lookism". Lookism means discriminating against someone based on his or her outward appearance and is just as bad as judging women for their skirts, neckline or make-up.
So, to demand that men should not wear tongs or shorts would be scandalous.
Classic arguments against it are thus invalidated!
- Flip-flops look ugly on men's feet and make annoying sounds while walking.
I've been wearing flip flops ever since I turned 25 and in all these years they haven’t made any squeaky noises, even when I’m driving my car. If I am running on the other hand, this may be true but I have no reason to run, not even to walk fast.
- You can lose them on a bike.
What even is a bicycle? I don't lose them riding a Vespa!
- You look lousy. In general and above all else, if your feet visually can't be described as anything else than horrible, well then there's nothing else to be said about this.
When I see men wearing sandals, 99% of them have well-groomed feet. That's something that can't be said about most women. I've seen so many carefree feet over the last summer and all of them belonged to women.
With discreetly painted toenails, the flip flop wearing emancipated man already looks more than acceptable.
- Men who wear flip flops are unsexy
If it's always about being sexy, then women should refrain from wearing boyfriend jeans or ballerina flats before denying men the possibility of wearing open-toed shoes.
In other countries it is normal that both sexes wear flip-flops
In Central and South America and most Asian countries, 80% of men and women wear flip-flops throughout the year.
To conclude: while wearing flip-flops I can very well buy stocks, eat strawberries, read Dada poems by Hugo Ball or even write comments!
That's why they are indispensable for me! If you ladies, prefer to sweat in closed shoes and knee-high socks in summer: do it, nobody will stop you.
The Italian label Salvatore Ferragamo even designs sandals to go with pj bottoms - wow.
Finally, leave men in flip-flops alone!
