10 essential summer items for men - Part 1
Inevitably, lists of ‘must-haves’ and ‘summer season rules’ hit the bull's eye with some essential points, but each one is different in terms of needs and tastes.
With this in mind, we hope to lay a small foundation for men's clothing that you can use in the summer. Have we missed anything? Let us know in the comments.
As the days get longer and hotter, it's time to prepare your wardrobe for the summer season. Whether you are packing for a cruise, a beach visit or a picnic, there are certain summery things that every man should have at his disposal. Here is our list, from head to toe.....
- 1. The Right Sunglasses
When buying a pair of sunglasses, there are several important things to consider. Firstly, you want to find a pair that fits your face and harmonizes with the formality of your entire outfit. For example, if you only wear a polo shirt with jeans or even a blazer and pants, you could wear aviator glasses, but it won’t look good with a formal business suit (unless you prefer the G-Man look). In more formal situations, Persols may be the better choice.
The second consideration for sunglasses is to make sure you buy the right frames to match your facial features, such as the overall shape and size of your nose. For example, if you have a nose of the same size, the large frames of airplanes may not work well.
- 2. Summer fabric shirts
If you are used to wearing normal cotton shirts for the rest of the year, summer is the time to try something new. This means more casual and breathable fabrics and trying out different textures. Sure, you can wear T-shirts and polo shirts casually, but our must-haves should keep with the classic men's style and tailor-made summer look.
Polos have developed strongly in recent years and are no longer only seen on the golf course, but also in the classic leisure industry. The fact that polos are knitted and often made from cotton jersey makes them breathable, which is ideal for the summer. The typical polo has short sleeves and depending on how traditional you are, you can wear one under a summer sports coat to keep your arms cool. If you find that this look is not for you, polo shirts are also supplied with long sleeves and full-length buttons, which can be more appealing to traditionalists, under a jacket.
The second must-have summer shirt is linen or a linen-cotton blend - if you don't really mind wrinkles. Both add texture and a relaxed look under a sports coat. The texture and wrinkling of linen is based on its long fibres, which also keep a linen shirt away from your skin, allowing for greater air circulation. Like a polo, you can wear a linen shirt without a jacket; in fact, it usually looks sharper than a polo because the fabric is more structured and yet creates a resort atmosphere.
- 3. White trousers
Yes, it may be difficult to keep them clean, but a durable white cotton (suit) pant that you can throw in the laundry is an absolute must for the summer. Not only do white pants create the right atmosphere for a resort or the Mediterranean, but they are also incredibly versatile, while matching shirts or jackets in almost any colour. White gives a beautiful tan to tanned skin and looks its best in full sunlight. So, summer is the perfect time to wear them.
- 4. No(-Show) Socks
There will definitely be some who are against being sockless at all. That's why we sing the virtues of no-show socks or "socks" that end under the ankles and look like you have bare feet. These socks are perfect for casual shoes and slippers, because you can catch air at your ankles, while avoiding having to wrap your calves in another layer of heat-insulating material.
Be sure to choose "invisible socks" that are cut deep enough, as to not to look like these, as some are more suitable for sneakers and lace-ups than for slippers or slip-on shoes. It doesn't matter which colour they fit, as they remain hidden. However, you can try versions that match the colour of your shoes or skin tone to be on the safe side. Ultimately, however, their purpose is practical and hygienic, not to be seen.
- 5. Stylish swimming shorts
Let me just say that I haven't worn shorts since elementary school. I don't swim either - except in the whirlpool ;) Stylish men only have a few possibilities to wear swim shorts. If you want to go to the beach in the summer or refresh yourself in the pool, swimming shorts or swimming trunks are a must. But if you're staying in a resort or luxury hotel in the Riviera, you'll need something more stylish.
